With friends like these . . .

11:37 Could you imagine what would happen, say, if the Territorial Army 'accidentally' shelled US Marines in Guantanamo Bay? WTF are amateurs doing in Afghanistan anyway? Furrfu.

Budgeting for revolt

11:28 So, an extra percent on every penny we earn - and they don't even call it tax. But that's not my problem. According to my sources in the CO, tax receipts have increased by 150 billion since the mid-90s, yet government department are underspending by billions. So the problem with the NHS is not cash, it's management and organization. I'd happily pay an extra couple of pennies in income tax if I could be sure that the service worked. But it doesn't, and it won't; the government is stealing our money. To date, this year alone I have spent nearly 3 hours (in total) waiting around in a clinic or hospital - after turning up in good time for the appointment. That's not a problem with funding, it's a problem with managerial competence. Instead of doing anythign sensible, the government is asking for 'daily reports until the situation improves' (STR).

Is open rebellion and exile the only option?

Say, what?

10:36 El Reg certainly can pull them. This flame is brilliant.

Older and wiser

10:40 Rachel this morning:
Are you 33 now? - and on replying in the affirmative -
Do you know everything?

Gun for hire

10:36 Since my birthday on Sunday I am now the proud owner of a Bosch jig saw. Great! Now I can make that that dollshouse which we . . . have . . . nowhere . . . to put. Hum. Anyone need anything jigging?

Kate bought me Civ3, which is incredibly good. I have no life left. Which is a shame because I also need to watch Armageddon and listen to Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant Massacree over and over and over . . .

Quack!

08:10 The Queen Jedi image below is from limpfish.com. I spent a few minutes giggling at that site yesterday.

Fame and infamy

16:51 During my web host downtime, my paper made it into print. Again, if you have trouble with the PDF, shout. They've used the cell-staining pictures from the paper in their Contents section, probably because that's something quite novel to a structural biologist ;)

I heard it on the grapevine - again

16:49 Protein chip technology is yielding results. You heard it here first, folks.

Stone, head: head, stone

16:22 Goliath is a WebDAV implementation for OS X (and earlier). Essentially you can treat FTP space (your web site, f'rexample) as Finder. Additionally, it greatly speeds up iDisk access, which must be a Good Thing®.

Toys

09:31 For those wimps who want to make OS X look like OS 9. Actually, I do miss WindowShade and am hoping it'll come back soon, for real.

On that same page, there are some bioinformatics links, which look quite interesting. Try not to wince too much at the dismissal of non-coding DNA, though.

Furrfu

09:00 Finally, my hosting gets back on line. I don't object to scheduled downtime, I do object to (a) not being told about it and (b) it going on for a week longer than scheduled. I'll play catchup at some point.
