Maaaaaaaaaaaaate!
16:07 I got rather excitable this morning. My visa application for the lanndownunner was approved. Moreover, I don't need my passport evidencing until I get there. Cool. Oh, and someone else in the building has just landed a job in Sydney (not to mention I know of at least 4 folk from here who will be visiting for various reasons in Feb/March) - time to get my flute and the multi-coloured trews.

Geeky goodness
11:57 Ah, this is more like it. The low-down on using the Mac-flavoured UNIXy goodness in a biological setting. Fairly primitive at the moment, but this is the sort of thing I'd like to fart around with and write about. Not much time at the moment (for obvious reasons) but I've passed the link on to the grad student, who is both a Mac and a UNIX newbie. I'll see how he gets on.

Rebuttal
13:08 What is most repulsive about Dawkins and Pullman is that they, in their writings, espouse the very traits that they claim to condemn - rather, the vices that they see in Christians and Christian writing. And no one seems to have a coherent response to their bile - after all, it is now incredibly trendy to bash Christians and Christian thought. So it's refreshing to find a lucid rebuttal of Pullman's baseless attack on Narnia.

Old and lonely
20:14 I have, in a cupboard, a (probably working - it did about 2 years ago, anyway) BBC 'B' and dual 40/80 disk drive. I've not done anything with it and it's just yet more to take to Australia. Any offers?

Show me the way to go home
14:45 It's bad enough trying to find properties when you're already in the target town or can drive to it in a day. But when you're looking for somewhere to rent that's 10,000 miles and twenty four hours in a Jumbo away, it's. . . not trivial. It's like looking (danger! ridiculous analogy ahead!) for a needle in a haystack - where the 'hay' is actually pins - using binoculars that are the wrong way round.
With chopsticks.

Combination of the blog
09:25 I think I've previously mentioned how occasionally the bioquip (above) becomes somehow cuttingly relevant. On Friday I finally got my hands on Cheap Thrills, which I've been after for an absolute ian. But I've got the real CD with the real cartoon artwork on the cover, not the silly psychedelic stuff on the iTMS. Thanks K, mwah.

Pinch me
09:20 I must be dreaming. Tony Bliar has said two sensible things this week (or in other words, things with which I agree). First he came out against capital punishment, and now he's backing nuclear energy.
I think I need a lie down.

Nobel books
17:13 Packing some books this afternoon and came across some mathematical texts that had the inscription JCKendrew and a date, sometimes a place (such as Delhi or Cambridge). One had W.G.Kendrew. That'll be John Kendrew and his dad, then. How cool is that?

Glossary
22:19 Where do I install BBEdit glossaries? In ~/Library/Application Support/BBedit/Glossary of course. Google, take note.
